What the heck is going on in Glasgow?!

My only negative comment is interactions with the police force. Click I Have iTunes to open it now. I do love these books!! The whole story is narrated by Maureen and we only witness her interviews with police and her thoughts about the police investigation. What made it human, what made it moving, was the detail.

Considering my Anthropology disseration was based on the scape-goating of minorities who are labelled with mental mmina this subject really appeals to me. In the 1 st book of the trilogy, GarnethillMaureen comes home drunk after a night out with her best friend, falls into bed, and in the morning finds her lover dead in her living-room, his throat slit.

Why is Scotland the most fascinating and beautiful country I’ve visited? And, to be honest, they were really dark books and I got really depressed writing them – I was fucking glad they were finished. Denise Mina’s first book is wonderfully dark, has all the grittiness of a Glasgow alleyway, ties in a dysfunctional and abusive family dynamic that plays into the story effectively mima adds tension.

In small part, this was due to Scottish slang and cadence of the dialogue. While I thought it was a good novel, it was by no means great. How would you go about finding the person who did this? They totally missed Suicide Tanya and the photograph in the paper. There were aspects I liked quite a lot: I really liked this book, the writing style drew me and kept me interested.

She stumbles home and falls into bed, failing to notice that her boyfriend, Douglas, has been brutally murdered in her living room.

She always intended it as a trilogy, partly because it was too big a family story to fit into one novel and partly because she liked the triptych form in art history. Read this book if you had read either the Paddy Meehan series or the Alex Morrow series by the same author.

Almost immediately, I felt as though Maureen could have been someone I knew. She has suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her father, and some members of her family, specifically her mother and a sister, refuse to believe her and that sets off a breakdown. They do seem to have a gift for finding themselves in incredibly awkward situations. Views ,ina Edit View history. I had three months. It also throws all of her future dealings with people into suspicion since they can always doubt that she understands truth from reality. May 04, Mary rated it really liked it.

The Garnethill Trilogy by Denise Mina

In the blink of a mascara-streaked eye, I was petulantly throwing a Campari and soda across the fitted white shag pile of my open plan living room. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. For a first novel, I think it was a tremendous effort, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries. Return to Book Page. It may be just me, but I find the acclimation time is much shorter when listening to Scottish to dialogue as opposed to reading. A really unique voice among mystery authors. I listened to the audio version and between the readers accent and the dramatic flair she was trying to inflect I didn’t catch how the heroine got the cut on her neck.

Very solid mystery with all the clues laid out and an appealing, if very flawed, protagonist in Maureen. I honestly believe Denise Mina had some fun with this, giving us a few situations, part serious, part tongue-in-cheek.

The protagonist, Maureen O’Donnell, at times felt like a proto-Lisbeth Salander this book was published several years before The Girl with the Dragon Tattoothough not quite as edgy or violent, and the comparison is a favorable one, for me.

She soon uncovers a trail of deception and repressed scandal that could clear her Maureen O’Donnell wakes up one morning to find her therapist boyfriend murdered in the middle of her living room and herself a prime suspect in a murder case. Garnethill was published in
